The Walter S. Johnson Foundation invests in Unity Care’s Successfully Independent Project
Thanks to a recent grant from the Walter S. Johnson Foundation, Unity Care is building our infrastructure and capacity to provide more effective programming for our youth through our Successfully Independent Project. At Unity Care, we strive not to just prepare our youths for independence, but to ensure that they have the foundation necessary to succeed and thrive in that independence.
To succeed in becoming independent, youth emerging from foster care often require support in meeting tangible basic needs such as housing, transportation, financial resources, medical care, and activities of daily living. They also require intangible supports such as learning to cope with challenging experiences, learning how to build healthy relationships, learning how to regulate emotions and learning how to set and maintain goals.
Through the Successfully Independent Project, we are able to invest in staff training, secure data management technology, partner with educational institutions, and develop a framework to sustain a larger volunteer workforce, allowing us to provide our high need youth with more trained adults who can help them meet their educational and career goals and provide them with the supports they require to become successfully independent!
