Community-Based Behavioral Health Internships

Undergraduate & Graduate Internships

 

Unity Care offers excellent fieldwork placement and training opportunities for BSW/MSW interns and MFT Trainees currently enrolled in a graduate level program. Internships are most appropriate for entry to intermediate-level students who already have some exposure to clinical populations and direct work with clients.

Graduate students at Unity Care will experience:

  • An intensive orientation to Unity Care’s population served, values, philosophy, and practice.
  • An opportunity to conduct fieldwork in a variety of programs.
  • Training and supervision focused on Unity Care’s treatment models.
  • Trainings on a wide range of topics applicable to working with at-risk children and their families.
  • Supervision provided by a Unity Care Clinician with an appropriate degree or license.
  • Opportunity to conduct case presentations with direct feedback from the Clinical Director and senior Clinicians.

 

Fieldwork Programs

Unity Care offers a wide variety of fieldwork placements including: residential group homes, school-based services, therapeutic behavioral services, outpatient mental health clinic and wraparound programs; all dedicated to serving at-risk and underserved foster children and their families throughout Northern California Bay Area communities. Programs are based in Santa Clara and Placer Counties.

 

Time Commitment

In order to establish therapeutic relationships with our youth and families, we require a nine to ten month commitment (12-16 hours per week) from all students; beginning in the Fall of each year and continuing through to the Spring of the following year.

  • For all inquires and to apply, please email your resume and completed internship application to rramirez@unitycare.org.
  • Applications are accepted starting in March of each year; all applications eligible for consideration must reach us by the end of June to be considered for the fall.

 

Additional Experiences:

  • Attend trainings on a variety of topics of special interest and clinical application
  • Become a valued member of a multidisciplinary professional treatment team
  • Receive weekly individual and group clinical supervision
  • Stipends are available for qualifying students

All Programs

Field Supervisor: TBD

 

Students will perform targeted care management, rehabilitation, and collateral services in clinic, school, and community-based settings for diverse children and youth with serious emotional disturbances and their families in the San Jose area. Students gain generalist practice in strengths-based assessment, diagnostic formulation (DSM IV & V), transformational care planning, and evidence-based treatment including psychoeducational groups. Full training in Medi-Cal documentation standards and CANS outcomes measurement. Bilingual and culturally diverse students are encouraged to apply.

 

Additional Experiences:

  • Attend trainings on a variety of topics of special interest and clinical application
  • Become a valued member of a multidisciplinary professional treatment team
  • Receive weekly individual and group clinical supervision

Odyssey (Wraparound)

Field Clinical Supervisor: Lupe Avila, MSW, ASW

(oversees interns from SJSU-School of Social Work)

 

Students will perform team facilitation, therapy, rehabilitation, and crisis intervention for a wide range of diverse youth with serious emotional disturbances and their families throughout Santa Clara County.  Students gain advanced clinical experience in strengths-based assessment, diagnostic formulation (DSM IV & V), transformational care planning, and evidence-based treatment including psychoeducational groups. Full training in Medi-Cal documentation standards and CANS outcomes measurement. Bilingual and culturally diverse students are encouraged to apply.


Nia Project (Differential Response)

Field Clinical Supervisor:  Virginia Jones, MSW, ASW

 

Students will perform as therapists in clinic, home, and community-based settings for young children and their families in order to maintain and strengthen family stability, and prevent penetration into the child welfare system. Students gain advanced clinical experience in strengths-based assessment, diagnostic formulation (DSM IV & V), transformational care planning, and evidence-based treatment including psychoeducational groups. Full training in Medi-Cal documentation standards. Bilingual and culturally diverse students are encouraged to apply.


Residential Treatment Homes

Field Clinical Supervisor: Jennifer Osborne, LMFT

 

Students will perform as therapists in one of our residential treatment homes. Students gain advanced clinical experience in strengths-based assessment, diagnostic formulation (DSM IV & V), transformational care planning, and evidence-based treatment including psycho-educational groups. Full training in Medi-Cal documentation standards. Bilingual and culturally diverse students are encouraged to apply.


Outpatient Intensive & School-Based Behavioral Health

Field Clinical Supervisor: Randall Ramírez, LCSW, LMFT

 

Students will perform as therapists in school, and community-based settings for diverse youth with serious emotional disturbances and their families in the San Jose area. Students gain advanced clinical experience in strengths-based assessment, diagnostic formulation (DSM IV & V), transformational care planning, and evidence-based treatment including psychoeducational groups. Full training in Medi-Cal documentation standards and CANS outcomes measurement. Bilingual and culturally diverse students are encouraged to apply.
