Independent Living Program (ILP)

Placer County

When they turn 18, Unity Care’s residents age-out of the foster care system. That’s where our Independent Living Program steps in. Through group workshops, individual coaching and goal-setting, ILP prepares our residents for that transition to self-sufficiency. The residents set their own goals, and Unity Care’s ILP supplies the resources and support necessary for them to reach those goals. Unity Care’s ILP Coordinator and Facilitators work with not only our own residents, but with many other at-risk youth throughout the community to ensure they learn the necessary skills to live independently.

Starting at age 16, residents can begin attending ILP workshops to develop skills in areas such as:

  • Education
  • Daily living survival skills
  • Choices and consequences
  • Social skills
  • Financial independence

ILP also offers assistance with employment and job searching skills. Residents can participate in resume workshops and mock interviews, as well as career readiness workshops. When they have completed all required workshops and have demonstrated competency in those areas, ILP participants can attend the annual graduation. Unity Care is confident that its ILP graduates have learned living skills they will use for the rest of their lives.
