What
is Unity Care?
The Unity Care Group Inc. is a community-based, non-profit,
youth development agency. Founded with the intent to develop educational
and social programs designed to enrich the lives of disadvantaged youth;
it is our mission to provide quality youth programs for the purpose of
creating healthier communities through life-long partnerships.
We have three primary objectives:
- To provide safe, secure and positive living environments;
- To educate at-risk youths; and
- To prepare our youths to pursue professions chronically
underrepresented by minorities.
A disproportionately large number of inner-city youths and children
of low-income households are being victimized by the ills of today's society.
The once popular aspirations of growing up in a supportive family environment,
graduating from high school, attending college, and becoming a contributing
member of society have been driven away by the exploding popularity of
drugs, gangs and other self-destructive activities.
Those youth who are able to get through the environmental challenges
by attempting to better themselves through education and healthy extra-curricular
activities are being challenged by yet another force — governmental
cutbacks that negatively effect school budgets, reduce the number of after
school programs, and all but eliminate weekend and summer recreational
programs and job training.
Our long-term goal is to offset the negative and destructive environments
they're accustomed to through education, self-management, interpersonal
skill building, and by providing them the opportunity to regularly interact
with an array of positive role models.
We have maintained close ties with the many young men and women who have
graduated from Unity Care. As they move forward in their lives pursuing
further academic excellence and professional achievement, they continue
to actively take part in Unity Care's programs and serve as positive role
models, tutors, and mentors for younger generations.
We believe that by providing a safe, nurturing and creative environment
full of social, academic, spiritual, and professional development opportunities
we will overcome the stagnation and poverty that have been so dominant
in the minority sector.
